When the Body Rebels, Gout Attacks

When the Body Rebels, Gout Attacks - You don’t just hear about somebody having gout, you hear a person having gout. There is an agonised moaning as of somebody being entertained in one of the torture chambers of the Inquisition. The person is having a gout attack.

When you see a person suffering from gout, you know that this is the body rebelling against having too many sharp crystals of uric acid accumulated in the joints, especially the big toe. Those uric acid crystals got there because of continuously excessive levels of uric acid in the blood. If there is too much concentration of uric acid in your blood the kidney can no longer filter out and dispose all of this waste. To get the uric acid out of the blood, needle-like uric acid crystals are formed. These crystals accumulate in the joints, particularly your big toe. And, when even the crystals reach excessive levels, the body will rebel.

The gout attacks can be triggered by many factors. Protein-rich foods are the common culprit, since the metabolism of protein produces uric acid as a waste product. But a special type of protein, called purine, produces substantial quantities of uric acid when metabolised. Thus foods like liver, kidneys, small intestines and other internal organs, and seafood like shellfish, salmon, and sardines are particularly suspect for gout.

The excruciating pain that comes with gout has two origins. The sharp, needle-like crystals of uric acid can stab at the tissue around the joints or get caught in the spaces of the joint, to give that stabbing, stinging pain that has the gout sufferer yelping in pain with every attempt to move. Then there is the painful ache caused by the inflammation of the nearby tissues causing them to swell, redden, and become war.

Without treatment, the first few acute attacks of gout will subside after a few days. Sufferers usually will seek some treatment to get over the insufferable pain. Gout attacks will progressively become more frequent and more painful; and they may take longer to subside. It is, therefore, recommended that you should seek more effective long-term treatment of gout, if you are a sufferer.

Aside from the probability of more painful gout attacks, more serious problems could ensue if it remains untreated. The overload of uric acid can also tax the kidneys and lead to tissue damage or painful kidney stones; there are also risks of hypertension (or high blood pressure).

There is no permanent cure for gout, but it is possible for you to reduce the risks of gout attacks occurring. A change in diet is the first step in the order of battle. Foods that do not contribute uric acid or that help remove uric acid into the body system are preferred. High protein foods should be avoided, while berries and fruits are highly effective in relieving the symptoms of gout. With proper diet and exercise, the disease can be controlled. It will be up to you.Gout Treatment

If you have a gout attack, many doctors recommend oral doses of ibuprofen or naproxen, available in both prescription and nonprescription versions, or other anti-inflammatory drugs. If you are taking aspirin, your doctor may recommend that you stop it temporarily. Aspirin can slow the elimination of uric acid and make gout worse. But if you take a low dose of aspirin to prevent other problems such as a heart attack, check with your doctor before stopping it.
